Have you ever felt what it feels like to be doing what you love? When your job makes your heart beat faster, your brain think clearer, and after a long day still leave with a smile on your face? Well, I've finally experienced this in my pursuit of culinary dreams!
I've been asked many times why I decided I wanted to cook for a living. Some thought it seemed like a decision out of context because of my love for theatre and filmmaking, and even some have tried to tell me that cooking is beneath me.
Oh how wrong they are.
You see I always knew I would cook; since I was really young cooking was such an integral part of my life. Of course, let me preface that by saying that my family is part Italian. We always ate well and my mom was always such an inspired cook. Despite being completely self-taught, she always made a concerted effort to make nutritious and delicious meals, and got her inspiration from her library of cookbooks and watching The Food Network. The food in our house was always delightful and satisfying, and made even the worst of days better.
I always helped my mom in the kitchen whenever I could. I grated the cheese, stirred the white sauce, and was the official taste-tester. And slowly but surely my passion for food began to grow and grow. It wasn't until my mom mentioned to me one day when I was about twelve that I should become a chef when I grew up that the light bulb clicked. From that point forward, I knew I was going to be a chef, no matter what it took.
As I grew older, however, my interests did begin to diverge; I discovered new passions, new ways of life, the smorgasbord of university programs that were out in the world. There were a few years where I completely forgot about my passion for food. My cookbooks collected dust over their food stains, The Food Network's views went down significantly (maybe that's jut me, but seeing as the network is consequently clogged with reality shows nowadays, I may not be far off), and a whole piece of me began to hibernate. But it was in the funny way that fate likes to work, that I was reawakened. I had the opportunity to start my culinary arts program at my local college halfway through my grade twelve year, with the addition of subsidized tuition.
I swear it was fate.
So here I am. I have rediscovered my passion for culinary arts like never before, and I have set off on my path for the future. I hope you enjoy reading about my adventures, and I hope in some way, somehow, you discover your passion and live it!
